Genki Japanese and Culture School (GenkiJACS) is an award-winning Japanese language school built for students who want to use Japanese confidently in real life. Asia Pathway works with all campuses of Genki Japanese and Culture School, including Tokyo, Fukuoka, Kyoto, Nagoya and Okinawa.

The school combines communicative teaching, very small classes and practical cultural experiences. Most courses can be adapted to different study lengths, while the five-campus network allows students to match their program with the Japan experience they want—from the energy of Tokyo to traditional Kyoto, immersive Fukuoka, central Nagoya or subtropical Okinawa.

A pioneering school with a strong history

GenkiJACS began with the vision that international students needed Japanese lessons designed for communication, enjoyment and cultural understanding. The idea took shape in 2004, and the first school opened in Fukuoka in early 2005. The name “Genki” reflects the energetic, lively approach that remains central to the classroom experience.

The school grew quickly from its original three-classroom premises. In 2009, GenkiJACS joined the International Association of Language Centres (IALC), placing it among a small group of independently inspected language schools and making it one of only two Japanese schools currently maintaining IALC membership. The Tokyo branch followed as the second campus in 2013, giving students a central base in Japan’s capital.

Fukuoka gained Japanese government accreditation for student-visa study in 2015. GenkiJACS then won the StudyTravel Star World Language School award in 2016 and repeated the achievement in 2018, 2019 and 2020/2021, becoming the first Japanese language school to win the category and the only one to win it multiple times. The school joined the WithUs education group in 2017, opened Kyoto in 2019, combined operations with I.C.NAGOYA in 2021 to establish its Nagoya pathway, and opened its fifth location in Okinawa on 16 June 2025.

Tokyo campus: study in the heart of Shinjuku

The Tokyo campus is located at Hanazono Building, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo 160-0022. It is approximately three minutes on foot from Shinjuku-sanchome Station and seven minutes from Shinjuku Station, with Hanazono Shrine beside the school. This location gives students exceptional access to Tokyo’s rail network, shopping, dining, entertainment, parks and cultural districts.

Tokyo is an excellent choice for students who want maximum variety outside class. One afternoon can be spent exploring Shinjuku, the next in historic Asakusa, creative Harajuku or Akihabara’s pop-culture district. The campus provides Wi-Fi, study areas, a student lounge, multimedia classroom technology and learning resources designed for international students.

Practical Japanese in small classes

The Core Japanese program normally includes 20 lessons per week, with each lesson lasting 50 minutes. Study is balanced between grammar and the four practical skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. Classes usually average around six students and are capped at eight, with a temporary exception of nine students possible during peak periods.

Courses are designed around real situations so students can practise Japanese in shops, restaurants, transport, social settings and everyday life. Qualified teachers, regular level checks and multiple ability groups help students study at an appropriate pace. Most short-term courses begin on Mondays throughout the year, while complete beginners use designated start dates.

Students can build on the Core Japanese course with conversation, cultural activities, private lessons and location-specific options. Longer pathways include 10-week and 20-week study, while eligible students seeking a student visa can use the Fukuoka school or the GenkiJACS-produced course at I.C.NAGOYA.

Five campuses, five ways to experience Japan

Fukuoka — the original campus and immersion hub

Fukuoka is where GenkiJACS began in 2005. The school is located at Genki Building, Hakataekihigashi 1-16-23, Hakata-ku, Fukuoka 812-0013, only minutes from Hakata Station. Fukuoka offers the convenience of a major city with a more relaxed pace, lower living costs and fewer international tourists than Tokyo, creating frequent opportunities to use Japanese in daily life. The city combines excellent food, beaches, shopping and easy travel around Kyushu. It is also GenkiJACS’ principal long-term campus, with eligible one-year and 18-month student-visa pathways and a supervised summer residence option for younger students.

Kyoto — language learning surrounded by tradition

The Kyoto campus opened in 2019 and is located at Kinwa Building, 569 Sanno-cho, Shimogyo-ku, Kyoto 600-8424. It is minutes from Shijo Station, around ten minutes from Kyoto Station by subway and within walking distance of historic districts and major cultural sites. Kyoto suits students who want Japanese language study closely connected with temples, festivals, traditional crafts, food culture and the rhythms of Japan’s former capital. The school’s bright classrooms, communal lounges and cultural activities make the city itself an extension of the classroom.

Nagoya — central Japan and a long-term study pathway

The Nagoya location opened through the 2021 integration with sister school I.C.NAGOYA. It is based at Noritake 1-2-2, Nakamura-ku, Nagoya 453-0014, close to Nagoya Station. Nagoya offers a major-city lifestyle with less intensity than Tokyo, strong manufacturing and design industries, samurai history, a lively music and subculture scene, and convenient rail access to Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and other regions. Students can add the Nagoya Tourism module, while eligible long-term students can access student-visa study through I.C.NAGOYA.

Okinawa — island culture, nature and sustainability

GenkiJACS Okinawa opened in Naha on 16 June 2025 at Oroku 824-17, Naha 901-0152. The newest and smallest campus offers a more personal island setting shaped by Okinawa’s distinct history, culture, warm climate and marine environment. Location-specific study can include marine activities, field learning and the Chura Green Course, which connects Japanese practice with sustainability, local communities and environmental issues. Okinawa is ideal for students seeking a slower pace and an experience very different from mainland Japan.

Accommodation and student support

GenkiJACS can arrange accommodation according to campus, age and availability. Options across the network include homestay with a Japanese family, private rooms in shared residences, supervised residence for eligible younger students, private apartments and selected long-term apartments. Homestay is especially valuable for students who want daily conversation practice and first-hand experience of Japanese home life, while residences and apartments offer more independence.

Students receive pre-arrival guidance, orientation and support during their stay.
