The safest big city on Earth

Singapore is routinely ranked among the safest cities in the world. Violent crime is extremely rare, streets are spotlit and patrolled, and it's completely normal for students to walk home late at night. You can leave a laptop on a café table to save your seat — and it will still be there.

Hawker centers: Michelin-level food for pocket change

The heart of Singaporean food culture is the hawker center — an open-air food court of dozens of stalls. Hawker culture is UNESCO-listed, and a Michelin-starred stall sells Hainanese chicken rice for under US$2. Expect laksa, char kway teow, satay, nasi lemak, and world-class chili crab. Eating out every day at S$3–6 a meal is normal for students.

A green, futuristic city

Despite the skyscrapers, Singapore is famously green. Gardens by the Bay is a study-day escape with its Supertree Grove and nightly light show, and the whole city runs on world-class public infrastructure. The MRT is air-conditioned, clean, and on time — everywhere, always.

A true multicultural melting pot

Singapore is a mix of Chinese, Malay, Indian, and Western cultures living side by side. You'll celebrate Lunar New Year, Deepavali, and Hari Raya, and your classmates will come from more than 100 countries. English is the working language everywhere, so you'll never feel lost.

Weekend trips across Southeast Asia

Changi Airport is consistently voted the world's best airport, and Singapore's location makes weekend travel trivial. Flights to Bali, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, and Ho Chi Minh City are short and cheap — students regularly visit two or three countries a semester.

The one thing to know: it's hot

Singapore is 1° north of the equator — expect 30°C and humid year-round, with short tropical downpours. Pack light, airy clothes and an umbrella, and embrace air conditioning indoors.
