A research-focused management pathway

This programme is designed for students who already hold an appropriate postgraduate-level qualification and are ready to undertake independent research. You will identify a meaningful problem or knowledge gap, position it within relevant management theory, select an appropriate research methodology and develop a substantial thesis supported by evidence and critical analysis.

Research topics may connect with management, business, commerce, business information or enterprise innovation. Topic suitability, supervision and the available elective are confirmed through ICL’s academic processes.

What you will study

Taught papers

• Research Methods - 15 credits: Build the methodological knowledge needed to design, conduct and evaluate advanced research.
• Elective Paper - 15 credits: Select an available Level 8 or Level 9 paper in Business, Management or Business Informatics that aligns with your proposed thesis topic.

Thesis

• Thesis - 90 credits: Plan and complete a substantial original research project that addresses a clearly defined question or gap in the literature.

Entry requirements

Applicants should normally meet one of the following pathways:

• A Postgraduate Diploma, master’s degree or another NZQF Level 8 qualification in a business-related subject from a recognised institution, supported by full academic transcripts.
• A Postgraduate Diploma, master’s degree or another NZQF Level 8 qualification in another subject from a recognised institution, supported by full academic transcripts, plus at least three years of relevant managerial and practical experience.

A personal statement explaining your reasons for studying the programme, research interests, motivations and future aspirations is strongly recommended. ICL assesses every application individually and may request further academic or professional evidence.

English-language requirements

International applicants normally require Academic IELTS 6.5 overall, with no individual band below 6.0, achieved in one examination within the accepted validity period. An equivalent English-language result recognised by NZQA may also be accepted.
