What you will study

100-hour English Language Teaching Methodology. Develop a substantial foundation in lesson planning, teaching approaches, classroom management, error correction, vocabulary, functions, receptive and productive skills, phonology, young learners, business English and one-to-one teaching.

80-hour Grammar and Language Awareness. Build the detailed grammatical knowledge needed to analyse English accurately and explain language clearly to learners at different levels.

60-hour Teaching English Online. Prepare for virtual teaching through focused study of online lesson planning, delivery, learner engagement, technology and career development.

10-hour Teaching Large Classes. Explore practical strategies for organising, engaging and managing larger groups in school and institutional settings.

A more comprehensive alternative to the 120-hour course

The 250-hour diploma provides substantially more training than the 120-hour Premier Online TEFL Course. Its extended methodology, grammar and online-teaching modules suit candidates who want deeper preparation, a regulated Level 5 qualification or a stronger foundation for competitive vacancies.

The 120-hour course remains an established entry route for many new teachers. Asia Pathway can help you compare the qualification level, study commitment, budget and intended Taiwan career pathway before choosing.

Flexible learning with experienced tutor support

The course combines independent online study with guidance from an experienced EFL tutor. Your tutor can answer questions, assess assignments and provide constructive feedback throughout the training. Seven months of access gives you time to progress sustainably, with extension options potentially available from The TEFL Org if needed.

Certification, regulation and quality assurance

Successful learners receive The TEFL Org’s 250-hour Level 5 TEFL qualification. It is awarded through TQUK, an Ofqual-recognised awarding organisation, and the course is approved under the Distance Education Accrediting Commission’s Approved Quality Curriculum scheme.

Level 5 describes the qualification’s position within the regulated framework. It is not a university degree or a Taiwan teaching licence, and it does not independently guarantee employment, a work permit, a visa or residence status.

Course entry requirements

  • No previous teaching experience is required.
  • No prior teaching qualification is required.
  • Applicants should speak English fluently.
  • Learners need sufficient English proficiency to understand the materials, complete written assignments and apply teaching terminology accurately.
  • A suitable device and reliable internet connection are required.
  • A degree is not required to enrol in the TEFL course; Taiwan employment and work-permit requirements are assessed separately.

Preparing to teach English in Taiwan

Taiwan offers several teaching environments. Private language schools, commonly known as buxibans or cram schools, employ foreign-language teachers to work with children, teenagers and adults. Other opportunities can include public or private schools, bilingual programmes, international schools and higher education, each with separate employer and regulatory requirements.

A Level 5 TEFL qualification can demonstrate substantial preparation and may be particularly relevant for candidates who do not hold a bachelor’s degree. It does not independently establish legal eligibility or replace professional credentials required for licensed-school positions.

Full-time foreign-language teaching in a cram school

Taiwan’s Workforce Development Agency publishes specific conditions for full-time foreign-language teachers employed by registered cram schools. Core criteria include:

  • Applicants must be at least 20 years old.
  • Applicants must have graduated from a university or college.
  • A candidate without a bachelor’s degree must also provide a qualified foreign-language teacher-training certificate.
  • The language taught must be an official language of the country shown on the teacher’s passport.
  • Teaching-related work must normally total at least 14 hours per week.
  • Where a teacher has multiple employers, each additional employer must normally provide at least six teaching-related hours per week.
  • Total teaching-related work must not exceed 32 hours per week.

The hiring cram school must be properly registered and applies for the employment permit. Academic documents, the employment contract, a recent qualifying health examination and other prescribed materials may be required.

Work permit, residence visa and ARC

The employer must obtain the appropriate work permit before employment begins. A white-collar worker applying for a resident visa generally submits the work permit, passport, application form, photographs and any additional documents requested by the authorities. For a resident-visa application based on employment, the remaining work-permit period must normally exceed six months.

After entering Taiwan with a resident visa, the holder must apply for an Alien Resident Certificate and re-entry permit within the prescribed period. Candidates should never begin paid teaching without the required permission.

Requirements for public schools, international schools, higher education and other teaching categories can differ from the cram-school rules above. Employer eligibility, academic background, teacher licensing, nationality, passport language and document authentication should always be checked for the specific role. Asia Pathway can help you review the pathway before you commit.

Where could the qualification lead?

Private language schools and buxibans. These schools may teach learners from early childhood through adulthood. Schedules often include afternoons, evenings or weekends, so applicants should review guaranteed hours, preparation time and contract conditions.

Public and private schools. School-based positions may involve English instruction, subject teaching or collaboration with local teachers. Recruitment routes and professional requirements vary and can be more demanding than cram-school roles.

Bilingual and international schools. These positions are generally competitive and commonly require a recognised teaching licence, curriculum experience and previous classroom practice beyond a TEFL qualification.

Colleges and universities. Higher-education employers establish their own academic and professional requirements, often expecting postgraduate qualifications or relevant experience.

Online English teaching. The substantial 60-hour online-teaching module prepares learners for virtual lesson planning, delivery and engagement. Platform, tax, contracting and work-authorisation rules depend on where the teacher and learners are located.
