International Undergraduate Degrees at Wenzhou-Kean University

Wenzhou-Kean University offers international students a four-year, English-taught undergraduate education in China through the academic model of Kean University in the United States. Students complete a Kean University curriculum, learn from globally recruited faculty and graduate with bachelor's degrees from both Wenzhou-Kean University and Kean University, together with the WKU graduation certificate, after meeting all academic requirements.

The program combines an American-style classroom experience with life in Wenzhou, one of China's most entrepreneurial coastal cities. Students can choose from 18 undergraduate majors across business, liberal arts, science, technology, architecture and design while building practical communication, research, presentation and intercultural skills.

Degrees and academic structure

WKU undergraduate degrees normally require four years of full-time study across eight semesters. Students complete major requirements, general education courses and the university's Chinese National Conditions Curriculum. International undergraduates complete 22 credits covering China Panorama, Mandarin Chinese and an introduction to China's development path and model.

Teaching follows an American university approach with discussion, reading, writing, case studies, laboratory or studio work, presentations, projects, quizzes and examinations. Assessment takes place throughout the semester, so regular attendance, participation and independent study are essential.

International admission requirements

Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens holding a foreign passport, have completed or be completing a recognised high-school qualification, and be in good physical and mental health with strong academic and personal standing. Students who previously held Chinese citizenship or who have a parent who is a Chinese citizen must satisfy WKU's additional nationality and overseas-residence requirements.

WKU uses a holistic review process. Academic records, English readiness, the personal essay and the overall strength of the application are considered together. SAT, ACT, A-Level, AP, IB and UEC results are optional for the 2026-2027 application cycle, although strong results may support admission, scholarship consideration or future credit assessment.

Application documents

Passport: A clear copy of the identification page of a valid passport.

Identification photograph: A colour JPG, JPEG or PNG image no larger than 200 KB and at least 295 x 413 pixels.

Academic transcript: High-school transcripts or GPA reports covering all relevant study.

Graduation evidence: A high-school diploma or a pre-graduation certificate for applicants who are still completing school.

Personal essay: A one- to two-page statement explaining educational and professional goals.

English evidence: An accepted English test result or documentation supporting an English-language waiver.

Optional academic tests: SAT, ACT, A-Level, AP, IB, UEC or other relevant results.

Documents not originally issued in English must be accompanied by certified English translations. Applicants with non-U.S. post-secondary study or credentials may be asked to obtain a course-by-course evaluation from a NACES member agency.

English-language requirements

Non-native English applicants can meet the language requirement with TOEFL iBT 79, paper-based TOEFL 550, IELTS 6.0 or Duolingo English Test 105. TOEFL tests taken after January 21, 2026 use the new score scale and require a minimum total score of 4.0. Test results must be no more than two years old and should be sent directly from the testing agency.

A waiver may be considered for students who completed secondary school in English, completed at least two college-level English Composition courses at an accredited U.S. institution with grades of B or higher, or achieved a qualifying result such as SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing 650, ACT English 26, GCE A-Level English grade C, AP English score 4, IB English A or B Higher Level score 5, or UEC English grade B3. Every waiver remains subject to WKU approval.

Architecture and design portfolio

Applicants to architecture and design programs must submit a portfolio containing at least 10 and no more than 12 individual pieces of creative work. The selection should demonstrate visual composition, drawing and visualisation, technical ability, creativity, presentation and thoughtful development across different media or subject areas.

2027 tuition and fees

Annual tuition: RMB 88,000.

On-campus accommodation: RMB 8,000 to RMB 10,000 for approximately 10 months, depending on room type.

Medical insurance: RMB 800 per year.

Application fee: RMB 400, payable upon admission.

Admission deposit: RMB 10,000. The deposit is non-refundable and is applied toward tuition after enrolment.

All payments to WKU must be made in RMB. The displayed U.S.-dollar amount is an approximate conversion for comparison and will change with exchange rates. Students should also budget for meals, utilities, textbooks, visa-related costs, transport, travel and personal expenses.

Freshman scholarships

First-Class Freshman Scholarship: A 60% reduction of annual tuition.

Second-Class Freshman Scholarship: A 30% reduction of annual tuition.

Scholarships are available to newly admitted international freshmen and can be renewed annually for the duration of the four-year program following an annual review. Admission and scholarship assessment are separate, and only admitted applicants proceed to scholarship review.

First-Class award criteria

Applicants may qualify through one of the published benchmarks: high-school GPA 3.5 out of 4.0; SAT 1300; ACT 27; AP scores of 4, 4 and 5 across three subjects; A-Level grades AAB; IB total 32; UEC total 25 or lower across five subjects; TOEFL iBT 98 or new-scale TOEFL 5.0; IELTS 7.0; or Duolingo 130.

Second-Class award criteria

Applicants may qualify through one of the published benchmarks: high-school GPA 3.0 out of 4.0; SAT 1250; ACT 25; AP scores of 4, 4 and 4 across three subjects; A-Level grades ABB; IB total 30; UEC total 28 or lower across five subjects; TOEFL iBT 87 or new-scale TOEFL 4.5; IELTS 6.5; or Duolingo 120.

Students applying through high-school GPA must provide an assessment of their transcript from a NACES member organisation unless exempted for U.S. credentials. Applicants from countries where English is an official language cannot use an English test score as their scholarship criterion.

Fall 2027 application deadline

Application deadline: June 15, 2027. Applications must be submitted through WKU's international online application system with all required documents. Early submission is recommended to allow enough time for review, payment, admission documentation, visa processing and travel planning.

Step 1 - Choose a major: Review the 18 undergraduate options and any portfolio requirements.

Step 2 - Prepare documents: Collect passport, academic, graduation, English and essay materials, together with certified translations where needed.

Step 3 - Apply online: Submit the application through the WKU International Student Application System.

Step 4 - Complete the review: Respond promptly if WKU requests additional documents or clarification.

Step 5 - Secure admission: After receiving the admission instructions, pay the application fee and non-refundable deposit.

Step 6 - Prepare for China: Complete student-visa, housing, insurance, travel and arrival arrangements.

Campus life and accommodation

WKU provides ten residence halls with different room configurations. Facilities include 24-hour security, wired and wireless internet access, maintenance support, laundry rooms, shared kitchens, discussion spaces, recreation areas, table tennis and billiards. Students live close to classrooms, laboratories, dining and activities.

Campus resources include the Student Learning and Activity Center, university library, immersive study rooms, comprehensive laboratory facilities, design studios, a Bloomberg finance laboratory, auditoriums, dining halls, sports facilities and a GRE and TOEFL iBT test centre. Clubs, cultural events, competitions, volunteering, research and residence activities help international students build friendships and confidence.

Research, careers and postgraduate pathways

WKU students can participate in faculty-led research, annual research presentations, innovation projects, internships and competitions. University admissions materials report more than 340 research projects, over 3,500 student presentations and more than 310 published papers involving student and faculty work.

For the 2025 graduating class, approximately 75% continued to further study. Among the reported postgraduate destinations, about 20% entered global top-10 universities, 60% entered global top-50 universities and 83% entered global top-100 universities.
