Real scholarships, genuinely available
New Zealand's universities are smaller than Australia's, which means less competition for scholarship funding per applicant. Both the government and the universities fund international students directly.
New Zealand Scholarships (government)
The New Zealand Scholarships programme (Mananga Tūtāpapa) funds full tuition, living allowances, and travel for students from eligible partner countries — across the Pacific, Southeast Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean. If your home country is on the list, this is the gold standard: fully funded study with no bond requirement to pay back.
University merit scholarships
- University of Auckland — the Auckland International Student Excellence Scholarship (up to NZD 10,000/year) and faculty awards.
- University of Otago — the Otago International Excellence Scholarship, generous for top international school leavers, including a partial scholarship package for strong first-year students.
- Victoria University of Wellington — undergraduate international scholarships and well-funded PhD stipends.
- University of Canterbury — international merit awards worth up to NZD 15,000/year.
Many of these are automatically considered when you're admitted — no separate essay required beyond your application.
PhD funding
PhD tuition at New Zealand universities is heavily subsidised (domestic-equivalent rates for internationals at several universities), and most PhD students receive a stipend covering living costs through university doctoral scholarships or supervisor grants. If you have a research profile, a funded New Zealand PhD is a realistic goal.
Commonwealth and regional awards
Some Commonwealth scholarships and development-agency awards include New Zealand placements. If your country participates, these cover tuition plus allowances — check your national education ministry.
How to apply
- Apply for admission with your best grades and a clear study statement — most merit scholarships are auto-considered.
- For government funding, apply through your home country's official NZ Scholarship route (deadlines are usually 6–12 months ahead).
- For PhD funding, approach potential supervisors directly before applying.
