Certification and accreditation

Successful learners receive The TEFL Org’s 120-hour TEFL certificate. The course is approved under the Distance Education Accrediting Commission’s Approved Quality Curriculum scheme and provides internationally recognised entry-level TEFL training.

This certificate is different from The TEFL Org’s 250-hour Level 5 qualification. Candidates seeking more extensive training or a regulated Level 5 diploma can compare both routes with Asia Pathway before enrolling.

Course entry requirements

  • No previous teaching experience is required.
  • No prior teaching qualification is required.
  • Applicants should speak English fluently.
  • Learners need sufficient English proficiency to understand the materials, complete written assignments and apply teaching terminology accurately.
  • A suitable device and reliable internet connection are required.
  • A degree is not required to enrol in the TEFL course; Taiwan employment and work-permit requirements are assessed separately.

Preparing to teach English in Taiwan

Taiwan offers several teaching environments. Private language schools, commonly known as buxibans or cram schools, recruit foreign-language teachers for children, teenagers and adults. Other possibilities can include public or private schools, bilingual programmes, international schools and higher education, each with its own employer and regulatory requirements.

A 120-hour TEFL certificate can strengthen a first-time teacher’s application and may be particularly relevant for candidates who do not hold a bachelor’s degree. It does not independently guarantee a job, work permit, visa or residence status.

Full-time foreign-language teaching in a cram school

Taiwan’s Workforce Development Agency publishes specific conditions for full-time foreign-language teachers employed by registered cram schools. The core criteria include:

  • Applicants must be at least 20 years old.
  • Applicants must have graduated from a university or college.
  • A candidate without a bachelor’s degree must also provide a qualified foreign-language teacher-training certificate.
  • The language taught must be an official language of the country shown on the teacher’s passport.
  • Teaching-related work must normally total at least 14 hours per week.
  • Where a teacher has multiple employers, each additional employer must normally provide at least six teaching-related hours per week.
  • Total teaching-related work must not exceed 32 hours per week.

The hiring cram school must be properly registered and applies for the employment permit. Academic documents, the employment contract, a recent qualifying health examination and other prescribed materials may be required.

Work permit, residence visa and ARC

The employer must obtain the appropriate work permit before the applicant begins employment. A white-collar worker applying for a resident visa generally submits the work permit, passport, application form, photographs and any additional documents requested by the authorities. For a resident-visa application based on employment, the remaining period on the work permit must normally exceed six months.

After entering Taiwan with a resident visa, the holder must apply for an Alien Resident Certificate and re-entry permit within the prescribed period. Candidates should never begin paid teaching without the required permission.

Requirements for public schools, international schools, higher education and other teaching categories can differ from the cram-school rules above. Employer eligibility, educational background, teacher licensing, nationality, passport language and document authentication should always be checked for the specific role. Asia Pathway can help you review the pathway before you commit.

Where could the qualification lead?

Private language schools and buxibans. These schools may teach learners from early childhood through adulthood. Timetables often include afternoons, evenings or weekends, so applicants should review guaranteed hours, preparation time and contract terms.

Public and private schools. School-based positions may involve subject teaching, English instruction or collaboration with local teachers. Recruitment routes and professional requirements vary and may be more demanding than cram-school roles.

Bilingual and international schools. These positions are generally competitive and commonly require a recognised teaching licence, curriculum experience and previous classroom practice beyond a TEFL certificate.

Colleges and universities. Higher-education employers set their own academic and professional requirements, often expecting postgraduate qualifications or relevant experience.

Online English teaching. The course includes dedicated online-teaching preparation for learners interested in location-flexible work. Platform, tax, work-authorisation and contracting rules depend on where the teacher and students are located.

Accredited training with independent quality oversight. The TEFL Org works with recognised education and quality bodies including DEAC/AQC, the British Accreditation Council and SQA. Its Level 5 qualification is awarded through TQUK, an Ofqual-recognised awarding organisation. The 120-hour Premier Online and 250-hour Level 5 Online TEFL courses are DEAC AQC approved.

Flexible online study with real tutor support. The 120-hour Premier Online TEFL Course and 250-hour Level 5 Online TEFL Diploma are self-paced and available online. A strong foundation for teaching opportunities across Asia. Asia Pathway connects The TEFL Org’s 120-hour and 250-hour courses with country-specific guidance for South Korea, Japan, China and Taiwan. Each pathway will explain how the qualification fits into local employer expectations, work-visa rules and job-search preparation.

Certification is one part of employment eligibility. A TEFL qualification does not guarantee a job or work visa. Requirements can include nationality, English fluency, a bachelor’s degree, background checks, health conditions and employer-specific criteria. Asia Pathway helps candidates compare destinations and understand the requirements before committing to a course or job search.

An employee-owned organisation with a wider social mission. The TEFL Org became an Employee Ownership Trust in 2021 and a certified B Corporation in 2024, reflecting its focus on learner support, responsible business and positive social and environmental impact.

Study online, prepare for the world. Although The TEFL Org’s registered contact location is in Inverness, Scotland, its online courses are designed for learners worldwide. Asia Pathway can help you choose between the 120-hour and 250-hour routes and build a realistic plan for teaching in your preferred Asian destination.
