What you will study

100-hour English Language Teaching Methodology. Develop a substantial foundation in lesson planning, teaching approaches, classroom management, error correction, vocabulary, functions, receptive and productive skills, phonology, young learners, business English and one-to-one teaching.

80-hour Grammar and Language Awareness. Build the detailed grammatical knowledge needed to analyse English accurately and explain language clearly to learners at different levels.

60-hour Teaching English Online. Prepare for virtual teaching through focused study of online lesson planning, delivery, learner engagement, technology and career development.

10-hour Teaching Large Classes. Explore practical ways to organise, engage and manage larger groups—valuable preparation for many school and institutional environments.

A more comprehensive alternative to the 120-hour course

The 250-hour diploma provides substantially more training than the 120-hour Premier Online TEFL Course. Its extended methodology, grammar and online-teaching modules suit candidates who want deeper preparation, a regulated Level 5 qualification or a stronger foundation for competitive vacancies.

The 120-hour course remains an established entry route for many new teachers. Asia Pathway can help you compare the time commitment, qualification level, career plans and budget before you choose.

Flexible learning with experienced tutor support

The course combines independent online study with support from an experienced EFL tutor. Your tutor can answer questions, assess assignments and provide constructive feedback throughout the training. Seven months of access allows you to work at a sustainable pace, with extension options potentially available from The TEFL Org if needed.

Certification, regulation and quality assurance

Successful learners receive The TEFL Org’s 250-hour Level 5 TEFL qualification. It is awarded through TQUK, an Ofqual-recognised awarding organisation, and the course is approved under the Distance Education Accrediting Commission’s Approved Quality Curriculum scheme.

Level 5 describes the qualification’s position within the regulated framework; it does not mean that the course is a university degree or automatically grants teacher-licensing, employment or immigration eligibility in China.

Course entry requirements

  • No previous teaching experience is required.
  • No prior teaching qualification is required.
  • Applicants should speak English fluently.
  • Learners need sufficient English proficiency to understand the materials, complete written assignments and apply teaching terminology accurately.
  • A suitable device and reliable internet connection are required.
  • A bachelor’s degree is not required to enrol in the TEFL course, but it is normally expected for mainstream employer-sponsored foreign-language teaching routes in China.

Preparing to teach English in China

China offers teaching environments that can include public and private schools, language centres, kindergartens, colleges and universities. International and bilingual schools may also recruit foreign teachers, although licensed-school positions commonly expect a recognised teaching licence and relevant classroom experience beyond TEFL certification.

A Level 5 TEFL qualification can demonstrate substantial preparation and may be relevant when an authority considers a work-experience exemption. It does not independently establish legal eligibility, guarantee employment or secure a visa.

Common work-permit and visa conditions

Foreign teachers must be employed lawfully by an organisation authorised to hire foreign nationals. For standard overseas recruitment, the employer normally supports the Foreigner’s Work Permit process before the applicant applies for a Z visa. Following arrival, the required procedures generally include obtaining the work permit and a work-type residence permit.

Common requirements for foreign-language teachers can include:

  • A bachelor’s degree or higher.
  • Teaching the applicant’s native language, subject to the rules applied by the relevant authority.
  • At least two years of relevant language-teaching experience, unless an accepted exemption applies.
  • An education, language or pedagogy degree; a recognised teacher qualification; or an international language-teaching certificate such as TEFL may support an exemption from submitting two years of work-experience evidence.
  • A confirmed position with an employer authorised to sponsor foreign staff.
  • A valid passport, employment documents and a Notification Letter of Foreigner’s Work Permit.
  • Authenticated or apostilled academic and professional documents where required.
  • A criminal-record certificate, health documentation and other materials requested by the employer or authorities.

Work-permit interpretation and document requirements can differ by city, province, employer, role and applicant profile. Candidates should not undertake paid teaching on a tourist, business or student visa. Asia Pathway can help you review the proposed position and document plan before you commit.

Where could the qualification lead?

Public and private schools. Foreign English teachers may work with children or teenagers in structured school settings. Class sizes, office hours, curriculum responsibilities and support vary by employer.

Language centres. Private training providers may teach young learners, adults or business clients. Timetables can include evenings and weekends, making careful contract review important.

Kindergartens and early-years settings. These roles usually value creativity, energy and age-appropriate classroom management. Applicants should confirm that the employer, position and work-permit arrangements are fully compliant.

Colleges and universities. Higher-education positions may offer a more academic setting and can impose additional requirements relating to degrees, experience, publications or specialist knowledge.

International and bilingual schools. These positions are generally competitive and may require a recognised teaching licence, curriculum experience and several years of classroom practice. A TEFL qualification alone does not replace those credentials.

Accredited training with independent quality oversight. The TEFL Org works with recognised education and quality bodies including DEAC/AQC, the British Accreditation Council and SQA. Its Level 5 qualification is awarded through TQUK, an Ofqual-recognised awarding organisation. The 120-hour Premier Online and 250-hour Level 5 Online TEFL courses are DEAC AQC approved.

Flexible online study with real tutor support. The 120-hour Premier Online TEFL Course and 250-hour Level 5 Online TEFL Diploma are self-paced and available online. Learners receive support from an experienced EFL tutor, feedback on assignments and access to course materials from different devices.

Support that continues after certification. Course graduates receive lifetime access to The TEFL Org Jobs Centre, which is updated with international and online teaching vacancies. The organisation also provides destination guides, webinars, career resources and graduate stories to help new teachers understand the global TEFL market.

A strong foundation for teaching opportunities across Asia. Asia Pathway connects The TEFL Org’s 120-hour and 250-hour courses with country-specific guidance for South Korea, Japan, China and Taiwan. Each pathway will explain how the qualification fits into local employer expectations, work-visa rules and job-search preparation.

Certification is one part of employment eligibility. A TEFL qualification does not guarantee a job or work visa. Requirements can include nationality, English fluency, a bachelor’s degree, background checks, health conditions and employer-specific criteria. Asia Pathway helps candidates compare destinations and understand the requirements before committing to a course or job search.

An employee-owned organisation with a wider social mission. The TEFL Org became an Employee Ownership Trust in 2021 and a certified B Corporation in 2024, reflecting its focus on learner support, responsible business and positive social and environmental impact.

Study online, prepare for the world. Although The TEFL Org’s registered contact location is in Inverness, Scotland, its online courses are designed for learners worldwide. Asia Pathway can help you choose between the 120-hour and 250-hour routes and build a realistic plan for teaching in your preferred Asian destination.
