Scholarship advice becomes unreliable when different awards are placed in one "full ride" table. Government scholarships, university tuition awards, exchange grants, and home-country funding have different application channels and coverage.
This guide maps the major 2026 routes for South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and China. The annual official notice for your nationality, level, and intake always overrides a summary.
Start with four funding questions
For every scholarship, record:
- who may apply
- which programs and institutions qualify
- where the application is submitted
- exactly what is covered
Then check the deadline, document authentication, language evidence, payment timing, renewal rules, and whether other awards can be combined.
"Full tuition" does not mean full funding. Housing, insurance, fees, travel, and living costs may remain.
South Korea
Global Korea Scholarship
The Global Korea Scholarship, or GKS, is South Korea's main government program for international students. Separate undergraduate and graduate cycles publish their own country quotas, eligible universities, departments, forms, and selection rules.
Benefits can include tuition, Korean language training, airfare, and living support. Applicants use an Embassy Track or University Track where allowed by the current guideline.
The 2026 graduate notice announced a planned intake of 2,000 scholars, but eligibility and places are distributed through detailed categories. Use the official notice rather than treating the total as an individual chance of selection.
University scholarships
Korean universities offer awards based on admission merit, grades, TOPIK, English proficiency, or continued academic performance. The official Study in Korea guidance notes that tuition support can range from partial to full, but every institution sets its own conditions.

Japan
Japanese Government MEXT Scholarship
MEXT has several categories, including research, undergraduate, teacher training, Japanese studies, college of technology, specialized training college, and Young Leaders Program awards.
Applications normally use embassy recommendation or university recommendation. Not every category is recruited in every country, and not every university has a recommendation quota.
MEXT can provide tuition exemption, a monthly allowance, and travel support under the applicable rules. Use the current category guideline and the Japanese embassy responsible for your nationality.
JASSO scholarships
JASSO administers support for privately financed international students and a Student Exchange Support Program for eligible short-term study under institutional agreements.
Many JASSO applications go through the school, and a school may have limited or no recommendation places. The exchange program requires an eligible agreement and home institution involvement.
University and private awards
Japanese universities offer scholarships and tuition reductions, while local governments and private foundations support narrower groups. The official scholarship search warns that information may not include every award and should be confirmed with the provider.

Taiwan
MOE Taiwan Scholarship
The 2026 MOE Taiwan Scholarship provides up to NT$40,000 per semester toward tuition and eligible fees. It also provides a monthly allowance of NT$15,000 for undergraduate students and NT$20,000 for master's and doctoral students.
The award excludes several costs, including accommodation and insurance. Applicants normally apply through the Taiwan mission responsible for their country or region and separately to universities.
Huayu Enrichment Scholarship
The Huayu Enrichment Scholarship funds Mandarin study at an approved center. It is not a degree scholarship. The 2026 guideline sets the monthly stipend at NT$28,000, while available durations, quotas, and deadlines vary by overseas mission.
TaiwanICDF
TaiwanICDF funds specified programs for citizens of eligible partner countries. The 2026 guide listed 32 participating programs. Applicants must satisfy both the scholarship rules and the partner university's admission requirements.
University awards

China
Chinese Government Scholarship
Chinese Government Scholarship routes can support degree and nondegree study through designated application channels and host institutions. Categories, eligible programs, documents, deadlines, and coverage depend on the current scheme and dispatching authority.
Use the official Campus China system and the responsible Chinese embassy, education authority, or university notice. Do not use an old agency number, university list, or application form.
University and local awards
Universities and provincial or municipal authorities may offer tuition, accommodation, stipend, or combined awards. Some are applied for with admission, while others require a separate file.

Exchange funding
Students nominated under a partner agreement may access home university mobility grants, host waivers, government exchange support, or a combination.
Ask the international office:
- which partner places carry funding
- whether tuition is paid at home or abroad
- how housing is charged
- whether funding is guaranteed or competitive
- when money is released
- what happens after withdrawal or a shorter stay
A tuition exchange can still leave substantial living costs.
Home-country funding
Search your own education ministry, foreign affairs department, student aid agency, scholarship foundation, employer, union, professional association, and university.
Eligibility may depend on citizenship, income, field, disability, region, or public service. National student aid may sometimes be used for an approved overseas program, but the rules are jurisdiction specific.
Build an application portfolio
Apply to distinct routes
Where the rules allow, combine a government application with university and home-country options. Do not submit the same generic essay everywhere.
Tailor the academic case
Explain why the program, institution, destination, and your future plan fit together. A scholarship committee needs more than enthusiasm for a country.
Use appropriate recommenders
Choose people who can provide specific evidence of academic ability, research potential, leadership, or professional readiness. Give them the award criteria and enough time.
Prepare documents early

Keep a funding ledger
