Summer & Short-Term Programs in Australia
Why a short-term program in Australia?
Australia is the classic gap-semester destination: a top-ranked university, an English-speaking culture, and beaches and rainforests for the weekends. Short programs are a low-commitment way to experience all of it.
University summer & winter schools
- University of Melbourne — the Melbourne Global Mobility summer/winter session with modules across business, law, and the arts.
- University of Sydney — a large exchange and short-program calendar, including January intensives.
- UNSW Sydney — summer terms strong in business and engineering.
- Queensland universities (Brisbane/Gold Coast) — popular for January summer schools in biology, marine science, and tourism.
Most short programs run 3–8 weeks and include cultural excursions. Costs typically run US$3,000–6,000 including accommodation, before flights.
Study-abroad exchanges
Most US and many Latin American universities have exchange partners in Australia. A semester exchange keeps your home tuition while you study in Melbourne or Sydney — often the cheapest way to study in Australia. Check your home university's international office for partner slots.
Internships in Australia
Australian employers value local experience, and short internships are realistic in fields like business, tech, and hospitality management. University-arranged placements and direct applications to the many multinationals and startups in Sydney and Melbourne are the main routes.
The Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462)
For citizens of eligible countries aged 18–30, the 462 working-holiday visa lets you live, work, and travel in Australia for up to a year (renewable under certain conditions). It's not for study, but you can take short courses alongside work — a common way to fund a gap year in Australia.
Visas for short programs
- Under 3 months: many Western Hemisphere passports enter Australia visa-free as visitors (Electronic Travel Authority), but you generally can't enrol in a longer-format course — check the rules for your exact program.
- 3 months or more: you'll need a Student Visa (subclass 500) with a CoE from your host institution.
Choosing a program
- All-round academics: Melbourne or Sydney
- Tech & business intensives: UNSW
- Marine science & nature: Queensland
- Add a working-holiday fund: combine study with the 462 route if eligible
