Summer & Short-Term Programs in New Zealand

Why a short-term program in New Zealand?

New Zealand is the ultimate gap-semester destination: a ranked university, an English-speaking culture, and mountains and beaches an hour away. Short programs give you the country at a fraction of a full degree's cost and commitment.

University summer schools

  • University of Auckland — summer school and certificate courses across business, engineering, and the humanities.
  • University of Otago — summer programmes and a famous residential-college summer community in Dunedin.
  • Victoria University of Wellington — summer intensives in politics, law, and the arts, set in the capital.

Most run 3–8 weeks and include excursions. Costs typically run US$2,500–5,000 including accommodation, before flights.

Semester exchanges

Most North American universities and many Latin American institutions have exchange partners in New Zealand. A semester exchange keeps your home tuition and often your scholarships while you study at Auckland, Otago, Victoria, or Canterbury — the cheapest high-quality route to New Zealand.

Internships in New Zealand

Kiwi employers favour local experience, and short internships are realistic in business, agribusiness, tech, and research. University-arranged placements and the compact, personal job market make internships easier to land than in bigger countries.

The Working Holiday visa

For citizens of eligible countries aged 18–35, New Zealand's working-holiday visa allows a year (or more) of living, working, and travelling. It's not for full study, but you can combine it with short or part-time courses — a favourite way to fund a big New Zealand adventure.

Visas for short programs

  • Under 3 months: many Western Hemisphere passports enter New Zealand visa-free as visitors, but formal short courses still need the right visa conditions — check before enrolling.
  • 3 months or more: you'll need a student visa arranged through your host institution.

Choosing a program

  • All-round academics: Auckland
  • University-town summer: Otago
  • Policy, law & arts: Victoria
  • Engineering & science intensives: Canterbury
  • Add a working holiday if you're 18–35 and eligible — combine short study with a year of Kiwi life
